Tibooburra 1860s "Despite the ever-present threat of a visit from bushrangers, one Manager at Tibooburra in the early 1860s seemed unruffled by a letter from the General Manager warning him that the Kelly gang was operating in the district. His laconic reply:- 'I have to inform you that these gentlemen have not yet put in appearance'. We wonder what reception the bushrangers would have received from such an apparently unflappable manager had they walked through his door."  1980 December Current Accounts Pages 22 to 23)

2013 March Geoff Chapman advised: Tinonee Branch # 2
While at the local library I picked up a small book on the history of Tinonee
It mentioned that the CBC Bank moved from its original building in 1891 to a newly built house on the corner of Manchester and Cotton Streets
The building can be viewed on Google Earth (Street View).  The Tinonee one can be identified by the later addition now used as a cafe.
2015 March Geoff Chapman forwarded a Google Earth photo.  Those premises survive to this day, with an addition thereto operating as “Memories Cafe”

2008 (BSC)

Tocumwal is on the Newell Highway, 21Km North of Cobram Vic. Situated on the Northern bank of the Murray River, the town was a border customs depot pre-Federation.

1887 Opened (79th Report);
1893 January Listed in 89th Report;

David & Helen Jobson went to Tocumwal to check out the branch in September 2008. Made enquiries with two old local business owners and the Tourist Information centre and confirmed that the building referred to is the old CBC. What he has worked out from speaking to these people is:
1893 The CBC bank opened for business in other original premises (long gone)
1890 The subject building was built in March.  John Beer advised 12/2020: by Narrandera architect, later Cootamundra, also designed cbc branch buildings at Walla Walla, and I think also Ariah Park and Beckom.
1927 Inspector's Report:
Tocumwal

H.A. Harrison, Manager. Pleasant manner and appearance. Not energetic or keen.

K.M. Webster, Accountant. A good officer and good penman.
Good manner and presence.

Business Quiet for two in winter.

Office neat and clean,

Town making slow progress.
National Bank have more accounts than we have.

1934 Listed in Century of Banking.
1940s The Bank closed for a while then reopened.
The premises continued to be occupied until
1977 when the CBC moved into new (ugly!) premises two doors away - now the local NAB.  The building was sold, carefully restored/renovated and used for a while as a business (what type is not known).  Now privately occupied.
It is really is a beautiful building. If you look closely over the top of the door you can see where the Bank's name has been chipped off in a fit of madness by someone. A bloody shame!
David Jobson also says:
Tocumwal is an interesting little town with a colourful history of river boats in the old days (It's right on the banks of the Murray River) Also there was a huge air base there during the second World War. Long gone however there are many of the old hangers still there. At the Info centre is an excellent photographic and model display of the Air Force days.  The NBA was there too and I'll send a separate picture of that old branch building.
There is some information contained in a book on the history of Tocumwal as follows:
The Trading Banks
The first Trading Bank in Tocumwal was opened by the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney in 1883. The first Manager of the Bank was Mr F Manning who also started the first Progress Association in Tocumwal in 1889.  The Branch was at first situated in leased premises in the main street but in March 1890, the new premises were built by Mr van Haurk and the bank remained in these premises until the branch was closed down when the bank system was rationalised in 1941 to overcome the staff shortage caused by the war.  The old bank premises are at present occupied by the Tocumwal Tourist Bureau and Employment Agency.
The Bank of New South Wales also had a branch in Tocumwal in the early days, commencing business soon after the C.B.C. During the panic in May 1893, the C.B.C. was forced to close its doors but the Bank of N.S.W. remained open.  However, the branch was never very successful and it was closed down permanently on 23/1/1894.
The National Bank
The National Bank of Australasia Limited opened its Tocumwal branch on 7th July, 1910, with a staff of two, in a three roomed shop situated approximately where Albert Brown & Co's office stood in the area where the Tocumwal Hotel now stands. The business was later moved to the building occupied by Rowntree's Cafe. Both these premises were leased and proved unsatisfactory for the expanding business of the Bank. Land was purchase at the corner of Murray Street and Deniliquin Road in February 1919, and the building was completed in August 1922, the builder being Mr J Smith who also built the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Hall and many other public and privatge buildings in Tocumwal and district.  This building is now being used as Lush Hairdressing.

2008 November Geoff Chapman wrote to Berrigan Shire Council and received the following information from Laurie Stevens, Town Planner:
"I refer to your enquiry regarding the former CBC Bank located at 45 Deniliquin Street, Tocumwal and wish to advise that the building remains and is currently utilised as a private residence.
Unfortunately Council has limited information regarding the building however historical notes indicate that the CBC Bank opened in 1890 and the site was used as a bank until 1941.  It is noted that the National Australia Bank operated from the building until the mid 1990's when the bank relocated to an adjoining building."

Laurie Stevens also supplied three photos, one of which is shown at left.

2007 Bill Frost wrote:-

"Tottenham branch was originally in a building to the west of the present building.  I was there in 1955,  John Searle was manager.
The building built as banking chamber and residence was owned by a local agent who threatened to invite another Bank (probably Rural Bank of N S W) if the CBC moved. 1955 approximately CBCofS bought the present site about that time and eventually called his bluff and moved and no other Bank opened."

2007 July John Searle advised: "It was built as a Bank Office, with Manager's Residence attached, for the Bank by Teddie Hudson, a Stock and Station Agent (as they were titled in those days, who retained the title and leased it to the Bank, which opened there in 1929, Bill Clement (Tom's Father), who was Accountant at Condobolin, appointed Manager.
The condition of the property had deteriorated, and during the time of my predecessor (Ian McKenzie) the Bank decided to buy a block of land and build. Ian set his sights on a block, but there was local opposition. I succeeded Ian in 1955, and I was charged, firstly, with endeavouring to purchase the existing property, from Teddy Hudson's son, Alan -although we were very good friends, he wanted too much, taking into account the condition of the building, and the cost of the work involved. I was then instructed to renew the search for a vacant block on which to build. This was successful but building did not commence in my time - I went to Mudgee in 1958. In later years I did call in on the Branch, in its new site, once. What happened to it when the Bank closed the Branch, I do not know. I assume some form of Agency was continued."
John Beer says: People joining CBCof S at Tottenham included Harold Lee who retired from CBCofS as GM Eastern before CBCofS became
National Australia Bank.  Mr Lee did lots for CBCofS including
1978 installation of CBCofS Regional Managers where he insisted they go immediately to their locations within their regions.

The CBC opened a branch in rented premises in 1885 in Tumbulgum. The bank was run from rented premises next door to the present Tumbulgum Hotel (Tavern). Formerly known as the Metropolitan Hotel. The Manager was a Mr. Charles Budd.
The Bank actually bought land at Tumbulgum to build premises but did not proceed when the village stopped growing and Murwillumbah became the business hub of the district. (advised by Ian Holston 2009)

2008 Ian Holston advises: It seems highly likely that it is not the building that Geoff Chapman  indicated. Spoke to the present owner who is very much into the history of the building and she says that it was the original bakery in the village.

1974-78 - Norm White advised in 2009: I was Manager at Tumut from 21.11.1974 until 5.4.1978, following Bill Kilpatrick, who was later an Auditor operating mainly in the A.C.T., I believe.
At the time I took over nothing had been done to improve the interior of the Manager's residence (upstairs except for one impractical room downstairs) since 1956. After considerable battle with Properties (Premises ?) I had the interior walls patched and painted and new carpet laid.
The property was being considered for classification, yet the exterior had also been let go. Fine cement ledges around the windows and chimneys had crumbled and the paintwork was peeling extensively. After further battling with H/O they agreed to a complete repair and paint.
Richard Body from Holbrook won the contract and bought in Italian artisans from elsewhere to craft the broken and crumbled cement ledges mentioned earlier. A painter was contracted to do the exterior (same fellow who did the interior) but I could not get H/O to approve a colour scheme. The day before the painter was ready to start he and I sat down and decided to go with "buff" coloured walls in the main - a "chocolate" colour for ledging/window ledges, and white for window frames, door frames and metal railing in the front of the building.
He was well under way a week later when H/O rang to say they had decided on a colour scheme - I promptly informed them it was too late.
In any event they liked the colour scheme so much that shortly afterward Gundagai, and the Yass, were done in the same colours.

Statement of Significance:
The former CBC Bank is finely designed in Victorian Free Classical style, and is a good example of the types of bank buildings designed by Mansfield Brothers in New South Wales at this time. (Criteria F.1 and D.2) Dating from 1889, the bank helps to reflect Tumut`s prosperity by the late nineteenth century. (Criterion A.4) An elegant building, sited on a corner of the main street, the bank contributes to the aesthetic qualities of the Tumut streetscape. (Criterion E.1).
Description:
The Tumut CBC Bank (now National Australia Bank) building was erected in 1889 at a cost of 3,992 pounds. Mansfield Brothers were the architects, and the building is similar to other Mansfield bank designs elsewhere in New South Wales (eg, CBC Forbes, Westpac Adelong). An elegant building reflecting Victorian Free Classical style, the bank helps to show Tumut`s prosperity during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Surveyed as a town in 1848, Tumut became an agricultural and pastoral centre, and local gold mining contributed to the town`s progress; Tumut became a municipality in 1887. Finely styled and located on a corner of the main street, the bank is an important element in the Tumut streetscape. Constructed of stuccoed brick, the bank is two storey and symmetrical. The banking chamber is on the ground floor, the upper floor being the former residence. A double storey verandah to the main facade is supported by fluted, cast iron columns; the upper floor has a simple balustrade, and on the ground floor is a pike and rail fence. Ground floor windows are double pane, double hung sashes with heavily moulded arched heads. On the upper floor are French doors with toplights and shutters. The hipped, slate roof has eaves which are supported by paired brackets. On the ground floor is a projecting, arched entrance porch.
Condition and Integrity:
The building was altered internally in 1956. At the time of nomination in 1976 it was reported to be in good condition and to have a high level of integrity externally. The National Australia Bank acquired the building in about 1984. (September 1992)
Bibliography:

Architecture", Sydney 1989.

2009 May, Norm White advised: Some years ago the property was sold to private persons, farmers from the Gilmore Valley (who were my customers). They redeveloped the side and back yards with shops, and lease the ground floor to the NAB.

2011 September Frank Maundrell forwarded the black & White photos of Tumut Branch, reproduced from a book called Tumut Centenary Celebrations 1824-1924, published at the time by a Committee set up for the purpose.

David Leathley may have access to a photo of the original premises.
There was a large Department store in Wharf Street Tweed Heads called Morley's. They were subsequently taken over by Western Stores a division of Myers in March 1959. Western Stores were good CBC customers.
