This site was acquired, the Rates record of 4-3-1907 showing that rates were being paid on unimproved land. The new brick premises were completed in 1908. The land measuring 53 ft x 165 ft was purchased in 1906 for 713 pounds. The new building, designed by
E.R. Laver, was erected in 1907 at a cost of 3,337 pounds. The building was built for the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Ltd. which operated out of it providing a contiuous banking service over many years. The bank was later amalgamated with the National Bank of Australia and after the branch was closed on this site, the building was then bought and taken over by Granleese Solicitors. As a result of 2 large floods, the town was moved to Nowra. Only a few buildings remain, one of which is the ex-CBC Bank Building built 1867/8.

NSW Heritage Office Statement of Significance:
'Ayrton's" important corner site is indicative of the buildings construction and commercial use as a bank. The Victorian building illustrates the common use of dormer windows in the mid nineteenth century. The building is important in illustrating commercial activity in the township of Terara in the 1860s. Historic and aesthetic value. Regional significance (Illawarra).
Physical Description: Victorian residence with attic storey. Hipped galvanised iron roof with splayed corners. Separate verandah returns to one side repeating corner splays. Three gabled dormer windows to west front, with three flat roofed dormers to the rear. Three rendered masonry chimneys project above the ridge capped by terracotta terminals and geometrical moulding. Double doors on the splayed south west corner denote commercial entrance. Modifications: West front obscured by mesh screening. Not seen internally. Attic conversion may or may not have been done after the building was changed to residential use; other slightly later examples exist e.g. Citrusgrove.
Further Information: Date: 1868 Historical Period: 1851-1875 Builder: A Lang & Fred Moore

Historical Notes: Located on the corner of Southern Road and Terara Road this home now named "Ayrton" was the site of the Commercial Bank. It was owned by Mrs Isaac's, licensee of the Royal Victoria Hotel, and the building was completed in February 1868. The carpenter and joiner was Mr A Lang of Terara and the stone, brick and plaster work was undertaken by Mr Fred Moore of Nowra. When erected the building of brick measured 60ft in length and 30ft in width and 12ft in height and was built on solid stone foundations (4ft 6" high). It contained 12 rooms, five of which were on the upper floor with dormer windows. The kitchen and other detached buildings were raised above flood level and from the kitchen, which contained a store and servants room, a piazza was erected.

The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney leased the property from Mrs Isaacs on 26 February 1868 and in 1871 purchased the property. Bank established a branch on this busy corner of Terara in 1859. The bank was closed in 1893, becoming a private residence.
Richard Caleb Leeming lived in the home from 1893 to 1906 and he named it 'Bleasedale'. Leeming was town clerk for the Central Shoalhaven Municipality Council and Council Meetings were held in the Council Chambers...'a room in the home of Leeming at Terrara, called "Bleasedale"..." Other owners have been Philip Henry Morton, Mark Walker, Victoria Ruth Stewart, Jane Goodger, Ivy Jane Beaven, Maclaw and Hilda Godlewski, Mr & Mrs Phillip Mullins and Dr C.A. Shepherd. Over the years this home has been known as "Inverness" and "Wasbank".

1970 as a town house according to John  Beer. Photo from www.Tourisminternet.com.au.

Photo Oct 2002 by David Jobson , who writes: The Rock building appeared to be occupied domestically from what I recall and in only fair condition, whereas Henty building is used commercially today and in very good condition. If you look closely, there are minor building differences, a covered in top verandah on the Henty building, a shop building next door on the left as well. At The Rock, there was no building on the left, only the driveway. Also the bottom front verandah posts are a different design, with the bases on the Henty building being thicker than the one on The Rock. I think they were both designed by the same bloke, E.R. Laver, architect from Cootamundra who designed both Corowa (my first managerial branch) and Lockhart. Those two branches also bear some design similarities.

2015 October Jane Woolley sent in these pictures with this annotation:   The photo of the building would indicate that some paint has been removed from above the doorway to reveal the name of the bank more distinctly.  As well a ‘heritage plaque’ has been applied near the doorway.  The wording provides a potted history of the building and neighbourhood.

This has been positively identified as Thirlmere by Geoff Smith in the CBC newsletter of Nov 2007 and I myself had a look at it in November and whilst the shed is not standing anymore the rest of the landmarks are.

1977 Listed in Annual Report as receiving office of Picton.
