1865 Branch opened 13 February (34th Report);
Temporary premises must have been occupied as Dubbo (and Bourke) branches opened in 1865.
First Manager was James Holmes who held the position for 35 years.

1865 saw the building from local sandstone of  Commercial Bank, the first Bank in Dubbo at 193 Macquarie Street. The original servants' quarters survive in the basement, as do the internal cedar staircase, the bank vault, the ironbark ceiling and lathe-and-plaster walls. This building, by architect Hilley, was completed in 1867.  Hilley designed the original 343 George Street Sydney C.B.C. Bank building built in the 1850s and now at Sydney University.
Constructed of sandstone to the designs of the architect Hilley in 1867, the building represented a substantial vote of confidence in the future of Dubbo by the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited, the first Bank to open for business in Dubbo and the first to construct major premises in the town.
Styled in a restrained Italianate manner, the dressed sandstone facades of the building are almost severe, lightened only by round-headed window openings arranged in pairs on the Macquarie Street facade and in triad on the Bultje Street facade, string courses at first floor level and rusticated quoins. The iron roof is obscured by the substantial projecting cornice.
The building is two storeys and has an extensive cellar. Much of the original interior is intact; lath and plaster walls and ceilings. (Heritage Branch Site inspection 14/12/1983).  It appears that the building may have been sandblasted for cleaning with subsequent erosion damage. Repointing with cement mortar also. 1984 - Heritage Council approval granted minor alterations to convert ground floor into a restaurant and upper floor into two offices. 1989 - Heritage Council approval for demolition of rear and erection of new addition. 1989 - Heritage Council approval for signage, and exterior colour scheme 1990 - Heritage Council approval for internal fitout for offices.
The building was originally the premises of the first bank in Dubbo, erected by the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. The building was constructed in 1867 to the design of the Architect Hilley. For many years it was the towns finest building and the only bank until 1876. When the bank moved further north the building became the offices of Talbragar Shire Council, established in 1907.
1893 listed in 89th Report January

1909-1980 it served as the local shire offices.
1979 In December the Dubbo Council and Dubbo Museum and Historical Society advised the Heritage Council that the Talbragar Shire building was under threat of demolition and requested protection under the Heritage Act, 1977. Following amalgamation of Dubbo and Talbragar the future of the building was uncertain. To provide security to the building an Interim Conservation Order was placed over the building on 2 May 1980.
1982 In recognition as an important item of the State environmental heritage and to ensure the protection of the building a Permanent Conservation Order was placed over the building on 23 July.

2005 John Ness photographed the building as a Hog's Breath cafe.
2006 saw it house the Old Shire Gallery which sells antiques, jewellery and fine arts.
313 Macquarie StreetGeoff Chapman reports - Past Manager's residence:
A building that was at one time Dubbo Branch Manager's residence at 313 Macquarie Street Dubbo, now houses Macquarie Club (Dubbo) Ltd, with bowling greens and tennis courts in the grounds.
2007 Alan Tolman provided the photo.

The branch later moved to the site still occupied.  In the 1960's the old site was occupied by Talbragar Shire Council until that Council was absorbed into Dubbo City Council. I was on Dubbo staff when centenary dinner was held." Notes by Geoff Chapman 20/8/05

1906-7 moved to 110-114 Macquarie Street;
The CBC Bank was designed and built about 1906 to 1907 by Laurie and Heath and is a fine Edwardian bank with a commanding arcaded elevation to Macquarie Street, incorporating a central turret. It is an important component of Dubbo’s townscape. The CBC Bank is constructed in the Edwardian style. Its facade is comprised of a low, central pyramid roofed turret flanked by arcaded and verandahed wings either side. (Branch Managers Report to Heritage Council 3/5/1979).

1929 Jan 6th photo forwarded in November 2012 by Jane Reardon, granddaughter of IC 'Chas' Woolley, advised: Each of the eight staff members in the photo has actually signed it.  My father has transcribed those signatures as being AW Podmore, Roger Podmore, C. Kingsmill, Grace Ranken, IC Woolley, Gordon Robertson, JW Kell (?), J Holmes.  IC Woolley is 2nd from left, and obviously Ms Ranken is 3rd from left but I don’t know any of the others.  [Note horse tethered at the front entrance!]

Dad says that a dentist also occupied the bank premises and he thinks that might be him in the white coat on the upstairs verandah.  The other side was the bank residence – notice the blinds because of the west aspect.  Even though the bank ruling was that a staff member had to reside on the premises, it was not occupied by the manager.  It was occupied by quite a junior person, a teller.  But dad has recollections of during test cricket seasons that staff would go upstairs to the flat to listen to it on the radio.  Jerry Holmes who is in the photo later became manager of Tumut branch.

In 1979 the Heritage Council received from Dubbo City Council a request for advice concerning the proposed demolition for redevelopment of the CBC Bank. Following an inspection by the Heritage Office and discussions with the owner an Interim Conservation Order was placed on 25 May 1979.
Following the placement of the Interim Conservation Order, the management of the CBC Bank, with advice from the Heritage Office, undertook to renovate, repair and adapt the premises. Internal modifications were made in 1980. The work carried out reinforced the building's important civic contribution to Dubbo.
A Permanent Conservation Order was placed over the property on 4 September 1981.

1954 photo by Ken Wood on Flickr.com Ken says: I noticed on the 1934 photo in the CBC web site the small palm trees out the front of the building and their absence in later photos. The one that I took in 1954 shows the palm trees 20 years older.  I got my 1st set of 1200 page ledgers there in 1953 and was awful proud of my advancement seeing that I started work at South Grafton Branch in Feb 1952.
