John "Jack" ALPEN (15/5/2006) John Searle was unable to fulfil his hopes of attending the June function, but wishes to record the following: Our paths crossed at an early date, without either of us knowing the other. Gladys and I were married at Parkes, and the Reception was held at the home of an Uncle of hers. In those far off days (1948), a means of communication, called Telegrams, was frequently used to convey good wishes to the Bride and Groom. Some of my friends knew I was in the CBC Bank, and that I was being married in Parkes, and they sent Telegrams - c/ CBC Bank. John Alpen was then Accountant at Parkes Branch, and he knew Gladys’ Uncle, and was aware of the Nuptial Occasion . He obliged by delivering the Telegrams to the Uncle’s address, but we didn’t meet. It was not until about 1956 I think, that we did meet when I was Manager at Tottenham. John, by then 2 I/C CBC Savings Bank, was visiting Branches to see how we were handling this new fangled form of Banking. Later, some will remember, he succeeded Don McClymont as Savings Bank supremo, in which period he earned the nickname of “Mr Skippy”, because of the style of Money Boxes introduced then. From that time at Tottenham, John took a close interest in my movements, but we did not work together until John succeeded Alan Bamford as Chief Manager in Victoria, and, from Manager Melbourne Office, I became his Assistant. In a recent Newsletter Noel Smith recalled his time in Melbourne with the two of us. From Melbourne I went to London, where Jack, having retired, and Barbara visited us. After our return to Australia, we were able to keep in touch, and we have happy memories of visiting them when they lived at Newport, and later at Bayview Gardens Retirement Village. Later, after Barbara’s death, I can recall John giving us a report of the Olympic Games in Barcelona, to which he had made a special trip, because a Grandson was a member of the “Awesome Foursome”. John and his son, George, built a home at Byron Bay, designed with a separate area for John, where I was able to visit him – by then I had retired, and Gladys and I visited the North Coast twice a year. to see a Brother and Sister of mine. John later moved to Queanbeyan to be near other Family, but unfortunately our communications after that were by telephone only. I’m sure that many Officers of my vintage will have happy memories of “Mr Skippy” – John, or Jack, as he was known to many. Kevin Meyer advised that John's death notice was in the Sydney Morning Herald on 16th May. He died in Canberra, where his funeral service is to be held. He was born on 31/10/1912. Richard Nott emailed: I worked in Savings Bank Administration for about three months in 1967. Jack as Savings Bank head ran a tight ship. One day he came down to me in an agitated state and when nearby personnel hit the ground as if a Mills bomb was to explode I knew I was in for something. He asked why I had appointed an agent at Fairy Meadow as I had no authority to approve such a request. I replied that I believed it to be fairly insignificant and suggested that he confirm it.He explained that he couldn't and only Roger Cavan the General Manager of the bank could. "You're kidding !" I retorted and added " But you're the head of the Savings Bank managing millions of bond holdings, how come you can't control such a small operational issue ?" I had obviously touched a raw nerve but I think my behaviour was mitigated by empathy with the situation. Some months later he asked me to help him out with a delay in getting the School Savings Bank system set up in the ACT and I was pleased to help him. We then both went to Canberra to ensure they system was in place and every branch knew what was happening. Barry Ward the ACT Chief Manager and John Culf the Asst Chief Manager met us in the Bank car at the airport. Barry bounded out at first stop to open the door. At the next stop Culfy bounded out and at the third stop I opened the door and retained the role. Coming home, looking over his half moon glasses Jack gave a wry smile and said he was glad to notice that I had quickly learned my pecking order in the transport role. The half moon glasses surfaced again the next week.I was at the Wahroonga tip and saw an identical pair on the rubbish and took them home.Fred Vogelmann, the Assistant Savings Bank Chief Manager was scared to death of Jack, so I snuck into Fred's office early on Monday morning and put the glasses under Fred's chair in the hope that when he heard the crunch and saw the outcome he would have had a severe tummy contraction ! I never heard what happened.Another day Jack noticed me somewhat reflective and I told him I was not popular at home for spending the $300 of carpet money we had saved by buying Vam shares that had dropped from $4.00 to $1.50. A week later he came up and told me he had had my housing loan extended by $300 to cover the carpet. This was the best unsolicited gift I ever received and that unexpected act endeared him to me. About ten years ago I was completing some insurance work with his son George and Jack invited me to lunch. It was a great day, mainly because I had a chance to tell him about the Fred Vogelmann story and to tell him how much the $300 meant in restoring my grace at home. I held him in the highest personal regard and was pleased to see him achieve a senior management role in the bank as he was one of the best technicians and brains that I had the pleasure to work with. His gruff front was largely that and he was a wonderful compassionate manager. Sadness is a price of affection, and I am saddened by his passing
George ARKINSTALL Kerri Kleidon of the NAB Queensland Retirees' Newsletter advised in their February 2006 issue that George has passed away. She says he apparently worked at Lismore many moons ago. George in 1969-70 was working in Brisbane Office Accountants Office and had a home in Brisbane and used to welcome people to stay there till they arranged other accommodation (e.g. John Beer stayed there initially after being allocated Audit Clerk in Queensland for 6 months from January 1970.)
John AUSTEN (10/9/2007) Des Akers advised: There is some sad news that John Austen passed away yesterday after suffering a stroke from which he never recovered. I also got to know John and his wife Norma in Adelaide where he was a branch manager. He was 74 years of age.

Info on death from Christine Deacon, wife of Harry Deacon WA who was CBC Audit Clerk, supplied by John Beer. VALE: B.J (Brian Bartley) ex CBC Gosnells; from NABREC WA March 2012 newsletter: On January 30th, 2012 a good gathering of our Members attended the funeral at Karrakatta, of our above esteemed colleague who died on January 21st. Brian formerly of the CBC , transferred from New South Wales before amalgamation, was aged 67 and has had indifferent health for some two years or more. It was pleasing to see his passing was acknowledged in WA, despite being far from his home state. Born in Liverpool, NSW, the family moved to Campbelltown where on completion of his schooling in 1960 he joined the CBC there. He made good progress through the ranks at a number of local Branches and was transferred to the CBC Fremantle WA as the Accountant in 1972. Came 1975 Brian was married to a fellow worker, Robin, in the CBC, also from NSW. A year later Brian was appointed to Manager of the CBC Gosnells, followed by similar appointments to Rockingham and Armadale. After the amalgamation he commenced as Commercial Business Manager at Murray St in 1990 then after a short period on the relieving staff he retired in 1993. Family wise the Bartley’s had a son, James but unfortunately the marriage terminated in the early eighties. However at a later date Brian was fortunate to team up with a school teacher, Beatrice Mills, whom I’m indebted to for the information. In retirement Brian resumed in the work force as a Financial Consultant with a local firm and indulged in travelling when time would allow. Members will remember Brian as one of the hard core workers of the era, quiet and unassuming. He was sports minded particularly cricket and loved his rose garden. Our sincere condolences are extended to son, James, his family and to Beatrice in their sad loss. R F T

Bob CLEMENT John Cecil George CLULOW (28/10/2008) Sally CLULOW (2/12/2008) 2nd December 2008 Clulow Sarah Irene "Sally" widow of Clulow John Cecil George died aged 86, late of Merewether (Newcastle Herald 4/12/08) within weeks of her husband. Harold Wood and Geoff Chapman advised that JCG Clulow , late of Merewether, passed away 28th October 2008 aged 85 years.Service to be held The Chapel Harris Street Wallsend 1/11/2008 commencing at 9.am For further information Pettigrew Family Funerals 4951 1166 John Hughes described him as a "good old CBC man". John Roberts advised: John was a good bloke and I believe that he hasn’t been well for yonks. I will be in contact with Sally in the near future. I spoke to JCG some time ago on the phone and he didn’t sound very well at that time! I opened Belmont Branch and received instructions from the Divisional Inspector while I was at H.O. supposedly to be instructed in the opening of a Branch that I should contact JCG who was then Accountant at Newcastle Branch and let him know that although I was younger and had been selected to open Belmont, that he shouldn’t be too concerned because he was more or less next on the list and would be very happy with his promotion. In due course I gave him the message and JCG opened Mayfield Branch which had been an agency and therefore would have been a better business than Belmont. I used to drive from Belmont into Newcastle to either drop off unwanted cash or pick up wanted cash every week with Elizabeth Rees, after Belmont got cracking and of course I would liaise with JCG and Chester Kenyon,(who was Assistant Accountant) because the then Manager whose name I can’t remember was usually busy. We had both been in the Air Force in the UK (where he met Sally) and I can well remember those days when both JCG and Jim Sharp would arrive at Belmont to pick me up and then we would go down to Gosford to get Harry Brook and his offsider (Accountant) ? Smith and then we would head off for Sydney and to the CBC RSL Sub-Branch for the monthly meeting at Head Office. Following that we would get half full before going to Central to catch the last train back to Gosford and then home! I always wondered what would have happened and where we would have finished up if we had gone to sleep on the train and missed the Gosford stop.
Geoff Chapman advises: Just thought you may like a copy of the service programme from John's funeral today. A number of old CBC people were there including Mike Freidman, Allan Roth, Ron Armstrong, Billy Butler, John Bowden, Kim Schonberger (alias Mrs Hamburger!!).

He served in the Bank mainly in Queensland, but resigned to buy a Newsagency. Kerri Kleidon wrote in the Queensland May Newsletter that Leo Costigan died. Leo did spend some time in NSW, but eventually came to Qld where he was retrenched in 1991. You might like to mention his death at the June meeting.
Cyril COXON (8/2007): Cyril passed away in August 2007. Kerri Kleidon advised: "Cyril Coxon was Principal at Fernleigh Castle in late 70s early 80s, then he came up to Queensland as Manager Brisbane Office. After his first wife died, he married Audrey (can't think what her maiden name was) she was the Secretary at Fernleigh. Audrey died I would think 20 yrs ago (maybe not quite that long). She was good friends with Barbara (again can't think of her surname) who worked at Head Office Ground Floor enquiries. I use to work with the pair of them out at the CBC Showground branch. Cyril was very 'upper crust' like a military man - but great fun."
Winsome CROWLEY (20/7/05): Winsome was known to Kerri (Scott) Kleidon. She was the first female Accountant appointed in Queensland in the CBC Bank. She had MS and had moved to Queensland. She originally came from Murwillumbah. Winsome was 55 and passed away peacefully in her sleep on 20/7/05. Bill Waldock said John was a gentleman and mentioned his Coffee plantation at Alstonville.
David DEEBLE (24/11/2011): Des Akers advised: you probably have seen the death notice in today’s Herald Sun. Sadly, David died at home on 24th age 71. There will be a private family funeral and a memorial service is to be announced in later papers. Sorry for the rush but we are out of town tomorrow seeing Coral’s Dad Tom at Nagambie. Coral and I can’t be at the Service as we are leaving Melbourne on Monday for two weeks R&R but have sent a note to Judy. Many thanks for advising the passing of David Deeble on 24th November 2011. I have only returned from Noosa today Saturday 3rd December 2011 and unfortunately missed the Memorial service held on Friday 2nd December 2011. David was my State Manager in W.A during 1981 when I was transferred as Melbourne Office Accountant to Manager Fremantle Branch W.A My wife Judy and I will always remember David and his wife Judy for their kindness and hospitality from the time we arrived in W.A. until when David and his wife Judy returned to Melbourne after the merger with the NAB. John and Judy Brophy.\
John H.I. DIGHT (27/8/2008): Brian DIXON (9/2007): Jim DORWARD (18/1/2012): Peter Lole advised Gwen McBeth "You may already know but very sad to report that Jim Dorward suddenly passed away on Wednesday. His wife Betty and family will be obviously devastated. He loved his Golf at Flinders and won the comp. on Tuesday (A grade) . Started work with him on 20/2/58 at 203 Elizabeth St. Branch. We saw a lot of each other especially living in the same town and shared the odd beer and story.. Also sad to hear about John Boadle – a lovely man. Regards, Peter".
