Mooroopna with a population of about 7,000 is separated from Shepparton by the Goulburn River.

1907 Bank of Victoria had a branch in Mooroopna

1927 06 30 & later CBC Reports Mooroopna not listed
1927 or later, possibly during WW11 the branch was downgraded to agency level as Shepparton is just over the river.

1942 Due to war rationalisation manpower shortages, all banks closed some branches.
1942 Commercial Banking Co Mooroopna may have become an agency of Commercial Banking Co Shepparton.

2012 07 28 from nab website I found that an Agency is conducted in Mooroopna full banking hours, and a Google Earth search reveals that the Agency has the appearance of a full branch.

From the CBC Staff Club membership list Geoff found Graeme Tuplin who worked at Shepparton branch “I emailed him at his business in Melbourne. He replied promptly, but had no information on Mooroopna.  He gave me the name of an ex-officer who now lives in Geelong, but I have little hope of contacting him by ‘phone. I have emailed the local historical society which only opens on Sundays, so I hope to get a reply this week.   David Jobson is going to Tatura, in the Shepparton area, shortly, and he will also make enquiries.

Does Council hold any images or information relating to these two banks in Mooroopna which will assist in the compilation of our records?  “Geoff Chapman Member/Researcher – CBC Staff Club”  Geoff received an advice from staff of Greater Shepparton Council that a branch was conducted in Mooroopna by The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited at an unknown date in a single storey building.  He says this must have been post 1927 and in a building that replaced the one inherited from Bank of Victoria.

Perhaps another Victorian member who worked in the Shepparton area may know some more details.

Murrayville
1996

site in 2011
Murrayville is located on the Mallee Highway, 22Km from the SA border.  Murrayville was named after the Premier of Victoria, John Murray, and was first settled about 1910.

From “Murrayville Reminiscences” self published by C C Thurlow c.1996:
“Murrayville had two banks soon after settlement. The Bank of Victoria was situated on land where the public hall now stands today.
It was a weatherboard building with a manager’s office and customer area. Attached at the rear were bachelor’s quarters, also stables and a shed at the back of the block, for one horse and the jinker, used by the Manager to go out and inspect properties for customer loans or bad debts.
If the Manager was married he would rent a house in the town. The teller would live on the premises, having his meals at the hotel. For many years the manager was single, the teller then had to board at the hotel.
In 1927 The Commercial Banking Co of Sydney took over the franchise, and the bank branch continued to operate until 1938, when it closed in favour of the Cowangie branch (Some 20Km East of Murrayville).
Some extracts from the book are available from the Webmaster.

1938 branch closed.
The land was purchased by the Murrayville Hotel, and later, the then owners, Rasche Brothers (farmers) who had purchased the hotel, donated the site for the building of the public hall, which was opened in 1957“
2011 Photos are Google Earth images of the hall constructed on the site of the BoV/CBC branch site in 1957.

2011 June Geoff Chapman advised: This information was sourced by the wife of ex-staff member, Brian Sandstrom. She was raised in Murrayville. Brian Sandstrom notes: In one of the old CBC Current Accounts magazines, Murrayville was mentioned as the branch in Victoria where any officer feared to receive a transfer to.
No information as to the opening date of the BoV branch was discovered.
